July 2017.
On Saturday July 15, Brittney Page, Kristin Postill and twelve friends standup paddleboarded the length of Kalamalka in support of the Okanagan Rail Trail raising just over $19,000, enough to pay for 100 meters of trail. Not only did they reach a lofty goal in only 2 weeks of campaigning they brought awareness of the OK Rail Trail to a younger demographic in the Okanagan who see it’s value innately fitting into their active Okanagan lifestyles.
Paddle energy was high and the weather perfect for a day out on the lake with a calm waters and a light summer breeze. The result was a lovely and tranquil paddle, just like how cyclists, walkers and runners will experience the final Rail Trail alongside beautiful Kalamalka Lake.
“We are so humbled for the support we received not only from friends but also the local community on this challenge. Saturday had such good vibes and that’s fully because of the people who came out to support, both on and off paddleboards. Special thanks Big Sun Vernon who styled the paddlers, Kalavida Surf Shop who offer discounted board rentals, R.E. Postill & Sons who helped add spark to beginning of the campaign by matching the first $5,000 raised and Metropolitan Hardwoods Floors Inc for a generous $1,000 donation.”
Kristin Postill Brittney and Kristin were so energized by the community they are planning to make the “Stand Up for…” Paddle an annual event, choosing a community initiative or charitable cause each year to support. “It is our intention to capture and keep momentum on this event to help support a new cause each year. Hopefully year over year, we’ll gain more paddlers and awareness to local causes and it will become a tentpole event each summer in the North Okanagan.” says Brittney Page.
The entire team is grateful for all the generous donations from individuals and businesses who support active and healthy lifestyles. Thank you to the following local business: Vernon Active Health, Excel Fitness Inc, Neuromovment, Aspire Health & Performance and Wolf-Tree Forestry Ltd.
