Thanks to nearly 5,000 donors and, more recently, a very generous Okanagan family and a grant from the Federal Government, the campaign to develop the abandoned railway into a community trail is in the final kilometre of funding.
“The community support for this project has been overwhelming” says trail ambassador Brad Clements. “We had hoped that the community would meet the challenge to fund this phase of development and we are amazed as the results. The last 2 years have been very inspiring seeing businesses, non-profits, clubs, governments and individuals of all ages come together to create this legacy”.
When the final goal is reached the completion of the trail can be scheduled. Also required to fully complete the development of the trail are the following:
1. Permits required to repair the flood damage along Kal and Wood lakes (combination of federal and provincial).
2. Agricultural Land Commission to finalize the trail requirements along ALR properties and provide the permit to open the trail. This is to ensure safety of trail users and to mitigate impact on agricultural operations.
3. Transfer of the land with the Indian Reserve at Duck Lake to the Okanagan Indian Band from the Federal Government.
